The Wahoo Fish (Acanthocybium solandri) is one of the most sought after sport fish. It can reach a large size (80#+) and will tremendous tackle busting runs when hooked. The wahoo is a pelagic fish that spends its time swimming near the surface and mid column. Although by definition a pelagic fish does not really use bottom habitat, wahoo are know from hanging around structure in deep water. They will often swim above deep water wrecks, under sea pinnacles and along sharp drop offs on the bottom.

They live in deep offshore waters but under certain conditions they will come into the shallow water to feed.

The Wahoo fish is well known for its extremely long and powerful runs when hooked. It is considered one of the fastest fish in the ocean, and can swim at speeds up to 50 miles per hour. It is in the mackerel family but is considered much better eating then its cousins the king and cero mackerel.

These fish are very popular with anglers for several reasons. One is their white flaky meat. Secondly they put up a great fight on light tackle, jumping out of the water numerous times before being subdued. They often run in schools especially when they are smaller sized, so often if you hook one, you will immediately hook another.

Wahoo often cruise around in small groups, but under certain conditions they will school up into large groups.
